Description : Director of Accounting Policy and Research

The successful candidate will lead Southern Company’s Accounting Research efforts, including responsibility for implementing new accounting standards, researching complex technical accounting issues, writing technical accounting memos, providing accounting advice to technical accounting teams and other areas within the company, and ensuring the proper application of complex accounting rules for rate regulation, revenue recognition, pension accounting, derivatives, leases, asset impairments, stock compensation, and acquisitions/dispositions.

Responsibilities:

Research unique and complex accounting matters to develop fact-based conclusions ensuring the appropriate application of authoritative accounting guidance including drafting technical accounting memos to support those conclusions

Present issues, options, and recommendations to management regarding potential transactions, including working with external auditors to consider all appropriate aspects of accounting

Participate in Audit Committee meetings, periodically providing overviews of technical accounting issues and annually summarizing significant accounting judgments and estimates

Lead the evaluation of new accounting standards to determine the potential impacts to the company’s financial statements, working with other areas of the company as necessary to understand current accounting practices

Build relationships with stakeholders from all areas of the company to ensure open lines of communication with respect to potential accounting matters, including Executive Management, Finance, Treasury, Internal Audit, Technology, and Subsidiary Comptroller teams

Support all areas of the company in determining answers to unusual accounting matters that may arise from time to time

Supervise the preparation of various financial statement footnotes in SEC filings including potential disclosures in quarterly and annual reports related to new accounting pronouncements

Oversee the completion of the quarterly and annual GAAP disclosure checklists

Perform ongoing assessments for complex accounting areas such as pension accounting, asset impairment, fair value accounting, derivative accounting, etc.

Assist external auditors, as necessary, in understanding the basis for technical accounting conclusions and related disclosures

Assist in the coordination, review and analysis of valuations prepared by external consultants related to business combinations and/or goodwill impairment analyses as well as support all areas of the organization in accounting for acquisitions and/or dispositions

Develop and deliver training on technical accounting issues to personnel within the accounting organization as well as other areas of the company

Oversee, manage, and develop accountants within the Accounting Research team

Ensure compliance with assigned internal controls

Perform other special projects and analyses as directed by management

Lead the Accounting Research team in a fair and equitable way to ensure meeting business delivery expectationsb

Drive individual and leadership development of staff to achieve professional and organizational success

Job likely will be a hybrid of remote and in-person and the successful candidate will lead Southern Company’s Accounting Research efforts, including responsibility for implementing new accounting standards, researching complex technical accounting issues, writing technical accounting memos, providing accounting advice to technical accounting teams and other areas within the company, and ensuring the proper application of complex accounting rules for rate regulation, revenue recognition, pension accounting, derivatives, leases, asset impairments, stock compensation, and acquisitions/dispositions.
Requirements : Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
• CPA required
• 10+ years of relevant accounting experience, including experience in a technical accounting role
• Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and SEC regulations
• Strong technical research skills
• A successful track record in getting to the right accounting position
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills

Preferred Qualifications:
• Power and utilities industry experience
• Master’s degree in Accounting
• Public Accounting experience, especially “National Office” or other technical advisory practice roles
• Prior experience analyzing and implementing new accounting standards across a large organization
• Prior experience drafting responses to FASB, FERC, or SEC proposals
• Prior experience with responding to SEC comment letters and/or FERC audit findings
