Across the country, governments, employers, and American families have struggled in the face of rising healthcare costs. Efforts historically have targeted narrow programs and patient populations, and while many have succeeded, healthcare costs continue to rise. It’s time to take a radically different approach. A new approach involves putting the patient at the center with the goals of improving value and providing better outcomes at a lower cost for patients. The Population Health Management (PHM) department at Mass General Brigham is charged with the challenge to drive better value for patients across Mass General Brigham. To achieve its goals, PHM leverages financial and clinical data to examine opportunities, designs, and delivers innovative care models using product development and design thinking disciplines, and leverages problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills to drive ongoing improvement.
Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy for Population Health Management, the Senior Consultant for Population Health Management guides a team in providing analyses and recommendations to inform the development of strategic projects across Population Health Management. These strategic planning projects are with a wide range of constituents.
The Senior Consultant is involved in multiple projects that answer broad questions about our current Population Health initiatives and develop strategies and financial analysis to assess the feasibility of new opportunities. This role provides models and other tools to support senior decision-making and assists with shaping the strategy of Population Health Management.
The PHM Strategy team is highly collaborative, and the Senior Consultant provides guidance and oversight to the Consultants and Analysts.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Develop Strategy for Value-Based Care
Provide direction to others performing background research, analytics, and business planning around new strategies, business opportunities, and partnerships, including regional, and national opportunities
Define needs for, and review, market research, and competitive intelligence to understand and size markets/opportunities, define the scope of services and value proposition, etc.
Shape and manage the ongoing scanning and understanding of the healthcare market for strategic threats, insights, and opportunities
Perform complex business analysis, including financial, operational, and human capital analysis, around new strategies, clinical businesses and opportunities, and partnerships, and form the analysis into actionable recommendations and plans
Lead the development of business cases and financial plans, engaging and aligning related business leaders throughout the process
At times lead, and other times help a new business owner to lead, the setting up the launch, and initial management of a new business, including but not limited to building governance, org design, program management ownership, and financial structure.
Lead due diligence on potential partnerships
Lead projects (e.g. business line strategy, new operating model, new product), planning and decision making (e.g. investment trade-offs/prioritization, organizational design, customer targeting, etc.), working with broad sets of leaders across the organization to advise on and help implement strategic plans and new business opportunities
Select and manage external consultants as needed to pursue new strategies, new opportunities, and partnerships
Frame and Develop Financial Analytics and Modeling
Manage the analysis involved in the development of the Mass General Brigham system-wide strategy around value-based care
Develop key business questions to frame analytics to ensure data requested and analyses conducted answer the critical questions such as the impact on contract performance
Gain and maintain knowledge of internal and external data sources including enterprise data warehouse and financial databases
Develop interactive dashboards and scenario modeling in collaboration with stakeholders using claims-based, clinical and other types of data showing risk and financial return. Document and crisply communicate assumptions for models.
Develop build vs. buy and partnership analyses, P&L modeling and return on investment calculations
Develop models that forecast performance on total medical expense trend and quality measures that are part of our risk contracts
Foster relationships with customers and stakeholders
Develop and foster effective relationships and collaboration with leaders and stakeholders across the system, and with external partners and organizations, in order to be identified as a key strategic partner and further advance strategies, partnerships, and new clinical business opportunities.
Coordinate with other leaders to understand market threats, insights, and opportunities from their domain perspective

Possible local travel to Mass General Brigham sites
Master’s degree in business administration, or related degree, with 2-3 + years experience post-MBA experience preferably in consulting, corporate strategy, corporate banking, or corporate development; or bachelor’s degree with 6-8 + years of experience in consulting, corporate strategy, corporate banking, or corporate development
Financial modeling experience strongly preferred
Strong excel skills
Prior healthcare experience is a plus
Strong understanding of operational and human capital considerations in business plan development and execution
Strong financial acumen
Able to build strong relationships with and effect alignment around internal constituents
Strong project management and organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication
