TechnoServe is a nonprofit economic development organization founded in 1968 that works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. Our programs develop the capacity of individuals and businesses, strengthen market systems, and facilitate the development of emerging industries that can serve as economic drivers in developing communities.
Our goal: to create sustainable economic growth that helps impoverished individuals improve their lives and secure a better future for their families.
TechnoServe has offices in 30 countries across the United States, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, as well as in London.
TechnoServe is seeking qualified candidates to join our Fellows Program. Fellows take part in field-based projects ranging from 3 to 12 months in which they engage directly with entrepreneurs, industry experts, TechnoServe field staff, and other stakeholders.
Fellows have the opportunity to lead projects in areas such as business plan development, industry analysis and strategy, financial analysis, and capital raising. A typical project might be conducting an Industry Strategic Plan (ISP). ISPs are a standard part of our approach to assessing the potential competitiveness, opportunities, challenges and key success factors in a given sector at both the country and regional levels.
Current opportunities exist in Africa, Latin America and India. In particular, we wish to highlight the following roles for which we are actively recruiting:
India: Develop an Industry Strategic Plan (ISP) for three high-value crops Coffee, Cashew, and Cocoa. Additional tasks include: leading the Value Chain Assessment for the three crops, researching funding and partnership opportunities, developing high-quality concept notes and managing relationships with clients and key stakeholders. The ISP will ultimately guide the TechnoServe India team to develop an intervention roadmap and support towards the positive impact on the revenue of farmers in India. (Based in Mumbai, India)
Kenya: Perform a market study for the Strengthening African Processors of Fortified Foods (SAPFF) project. SAPFF seeks to increase the coverage of fortified foods by increasing the compliance of food processors to meet national standards. The market study will yield potential recommendations related to the different factors affecting the fortification compliance levels within the industry. The findings of the study will be utilized to enhance the effectiveness of SAPFF. Thus, enhancing the operating environment for industry actors. (Based in Nairobi, Kenya; potential travel to Lagos, Nigeria)
Benin: Provide leadership to the development of an Industry Strategic Plan (ISP) for BeniBiz. BeniBiz is a business accelerator project that will help Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSME) build competitive businesses. The Fellow will design the approach for developing the fish farming ISP, including data collection, analysis of the data, and report writing. The purpose of the ISP is to develop a strategy towards the transformation of the fish farming sector, which will help generate wealth for Beninese through the creation of new jobs. (Based in Cotonou, Benin; French proficiency required)
Mozambique: Develop a soybean Value Chain for the Seed Multiplication Project. This project was designed to increase the availability of affordable, high-quality seeds in Mozambique by working with local farmers. Responsibilities include: identifying and mapping potential farmers and partners, identifying strategies for marketing soybean, and testing the identified assumptions and risks. The Value Chain will help to introduce soybean as a new crop to farmers and agribusinesses in Mozambique. (Based in Montepuez, Mozambique, with local travel)
Fees and Expenses:
TechnoServe will cover work-related costs of international travel, including airfare, in-country accommodation, local transportation and a daily per diem for meals. These expenses are agreed upon in advance in a volunteer contract. Please note that this is a pro bono position and TechnoServe cannot provide fees for services rendered.
The process for becoming a Fellow is highly selective. In assessing a candidate’s fit with this opening, we will consider the following:
• Minimum of an undergraduate degree
• Minimum of two years of full-time work experience
