Description : The practice of investment is changing. A rapidly growing set of investors around the globe are making investment choices targeting not just return, but also sustainability, values-alignment and/or impact.
Harvard Business School seeks a candidate to serve as a Research Associate, sharing time between Harvard’s Impact Investing project led by Professors Shawn Cole and Josh Lerner and the Social Impact Collaboratory. The Research Associate (RA) will work in the areas of impact investing, social impact, scaling of impact companies, and social ventures to support this agenda.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong conceptual ability; high quality of mind; excellent writing and interpersonal skills; the ability to work productively under time pressure; the capacity to work well independently; and the ability to interact successfully with senior leaders and project team members. The position will involve reading and synthesizing academic research, collecting and assembling data from disparate sources, creating databases and manipulating data using various statistical software packages.

Primary duties include:
• Take complex research ideas, concepts, and methodologies and apply them to the impact investing space;
• Identify, engage, and interview corporate leaders of investing firms and social enterprises to learn about their experiences to both support the creation of new materials (including narratives, caselets, a database, etc.) and to identify opportunities for other forms of collaboration;
• Coordinate, track, and facilitate collaboration with internal and external stakeholders including faculty, members of research team, and business leaders in a responsive and professional manner;
• Structure assignments, meetings, key milestones, and manage near- and long-term priorities and keep senior advisers informed;
• Collect and assemble data from complex and disparate sources.
• Create original, thought-provoking, innovative presentations, content, and writings for domestic and international audiences.
• Develop, design, conduct, analyze, and implement research; collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments;
• Provide analysis, editing and drafts for internal and external deliverables;
• Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. When confronted with unexpected data, be able to make deductions, add insight, and draw conclusions to share with advisers.

This is a full-time term appointment starting this fall (start date flexible) through June 30, 2020, with likely re-appointment for the next academic year (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021). All HBS RA roles are structured as one year term appointments with potential for renewal.

Requirements : Basic Qualifications:
• BA/BS required.
• 2+ years of program delivery and support, with experience developing and managing relationships with diverse external constituencies.
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, are expected.
Additional Qualifications:
• Advanced degree preferred. Working knowledge of social impact, scaling of impact companies, accounting, investing, strategy, and social economics is preferred.
• Evidence of outstanding academic achievement and of independent research experience.
• Proven project management and operational skills are essential. Ability to design, implement, and assess new processes.
• Proven communication (written and oral) and organizational skills, initiative, flexibility, and attention to detail.
• Must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work and ability to work with shifting priorities and under tight deadlines. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to work both independently and as a team member.
• Willingness to travel (the travel expected is moderate).
• Ideal individual would have a passion for this topic and an ability to be innovative and creative in thinking about research agenda.
